Water Body Restoration: Carrying out the Necessary Measures

The Canton of Bern has decreed measures for water body restoration in the KWO's catchment area. These measures will be carried out by the KWO within the specified time frame of the end of 2012.

The KWO will carry out the measures within the time frame till the end of 2012. Measures include eleven residual water measurements, relinquishment of the use of one river, river bed management at Obermad and a fish ladder.

According to Dr. Gianni Biasiutti, the KWO is at the beginning of one of most important ecological programs in the KWO's catchment area. Research has shown that the catchment waters are generally in good condition. There are, however, a few problematic areas and the potential for ecological enhancement. These measures are heralding a new, exemplary way of dealing with water body restoration in Switzerland. The KWO finds it important to inform the general public about their actions and the results achieved.

Dr. Markus Meyer, President of the Bernese Cantonal Fischery Commission is pleased that it has been possible to set these measures at a higher level than was aimed for. This was only possible because of the constructive climate between the Fishery Commission, the KWO and the advisory groups and organisations involved.
