UNESCO World Heritage Area

The UNESCO World Heritage Area Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn (JAB) is the first natural heritage area in Switzerland and the entire alps. The world heritage area stretches over 800 km2 of unbelievably beautiful terrain. The 22m long Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier in the alps and is the heart of this area.

The east side of the world heritage area stretches along the Oberaar and Unteraar glaciers and down to the KWO storage lakes of Oberaar and Grimsel. The KWO is the largest private property owner in the heritage area with a total of 8,570 hectares.

The huge glaciers act as water reservoirs in the alps. In summer, when the ice melts, they provide the "fuel" for the production of hydroelectricity as well as supplying the lowlands with precious water.

The KWO works in a partnership with the UNESCO-management centre. We are highly committed to landscape management and are actively involved in the development of  CO2    mobility around the globe - an example of which is our  electric bicycle tour around the UNESCO World Heritage Area.
